How to choose the type of wire and cable in special environments
Release time: 2024-08-20
Wire and cable applications in special environments require unique design and material selection to ensure safe and reliable operation under extreme conditions. Below, we explore types of wire and cable suitable for high-temperature, low-temperature, and corrosive environments, along with their characteristics.
Wire and Cable for High-Temperature Environments
Characteristics and Applications: Wire and cable for high-temperature environments are commonly used in industrial heating equipment, automotive engine compartments, and aerospace fields, where temperatures can exceed 100°C or even reach several hundred degrees Celsius.
Material Selection:
- Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): A high-temperature insulation material with excellent heat resistance (up to 260°C), as well as good chemical stability and dielectric properties.
- Silicone Rubber: Suitable for applications requiring high flexibility, with a broad operating temperature range (-60°C to 200°C), and good weather resistance and UV resistance.
- Fluorinated Rubber: Particularly suitable for environments that need resistance to oil and chemicals, with a working temperature range of about -40°C to 250°C.
According to ASTM D1056, PTFE-insulated cable can maintain stable electrical properties at a working temperature of 260°C. Silicone rubber-insulated cable can maintain a service life of at least 20 years at a continuous working temperature of 180°C.
Wire and Cable for Low-Temperature Environments
Characteristics and Applications: Wire and cable for low-temperature environments must remain flexible and maintain electrical properties at very low temperatures (such as below -40°C). These cables are widely used in polar research stations and refrigerated transport vehicles.
Material Selection:
- Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Although regular PVC becomes brittle at low temperatures, modified PVC (such as soft PVC) can remain flexible at lower temperatures.
- Polyurethane (PU): With excellent low-temperature performance, it maintains flexibility and wear resistance in the temperature range of -60°C to +80°C.
- Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP): In addition to high-temperature resistance, FEP also has good low-temperature performance, usable in the temperature range of -60°C to 200°C.
According to IEC 60227, soft PVC insulated cable can still maintain certain bending performance at -25°C. FEP insulated cable has a bending radius of only five times the cable diameter at a low temperature of -60°C.
Wire and Cable for Corrosive Environments
Characteristics and Applications: In corrosive environments, wire and cable need to resist the corrosion of acids and alkalis. These cables are commonly used in chemical plants, offshore platforms, and similar environments.
Material Selection:
- Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): With excellent chemical stability, it is almost unaffected by any chemicals.
- Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF): Good chemical resistance and mechanical strength, suitable for occasions that require resistance to acid and alkali corrosion.
- Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM): Good chemical and oil resistance, suitable for harsh chemical environments.
PTFE insulated cable will not undergo physical or chemical changes even after long-term immersion in strong acid and strong alkali environments. PVDF insulated cable shows less than 10% tensile strength loss after being soaked in a 10% HCl solution for 24 hours.
Considering the specific needs of different industries, there are also special wires and cables designed for specific application scenarios on the market. For example, cables in the nuclear power field need to have very high radiation resistance, while cables in the ship field need to have good seawater corrosion resistance. Therefore, when selecting wires and cables, not only should the basic temperature and environmental factors be considered, but also the specific standards and specifications of the industry.
In summary, the application of wire and cable in special environments requires careful assessment of material selection, design, and installation requirements to ensure the safety and stable operation of the power system.
